Boycotting Fast Fashion – 3 ways to make better eco-conscious fashion choices

3 ways to make eco-conscious fashion choices

We’ve all heard the stats, we’ve all watched the documentaries, we’ve all heard the existential crises, it’s a grim situation guys. The fast fashion industry is constantly churning out new products, and producing huge amounts of by-product waste which pollutes oceans, wastes water, and fills landfills. The industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions, is the second-largest consumer of water, and is estimated to be responsible for 20-35% of all micro-plastics in our beautiful oceans. By changing the way we interact with the world of fashion, we can do our bit to keep our planet safe and clean, and our oceans merpeople-friendly.

1) Choose eco-conscious brands

Some of the big companies are starting to make changes, but progress is slow, and we need to make changes ASAP! The simple act of choosing to support eco-conscious brands is a small but mighty step we can take today to make our shopping  addiction  habits  better for the planet.

At Euphoric Threads our handmade clothing is made from 100% recycled plastic waste that would have otherwise been destined for landfill and our oceans.

Many of our latest creations (like these high vibe tropical one-pieces) are all made with ECONYL, an innovation in eco textiles which transforms plastic bottles, fishing nets, and marine waste into a high-quality, durable textile. So with every Euphoric Threads purchase you’re not only avoiding the pollution of fast-fashion, you’re actually helping to CLEAN the oceans! Plus, you look drop dead fabulous and you support a slow-fashion indie brand.

And we’re not alone, it’s now easy to shop sustainable and ethically made bags, sunglasses, and even shoes to compliment your garms, yay!

2) Be a loud and proud outfit repeater!

Once upon a time there were 4 seasons, but then one day fast fashion decided there were in fact 52. Yep you heard right, high street retailers are releasing new collections WEEKLY. Wearing the same outfit is dubbed “lazy and uncool” in the eyes of social media, and apparently recent shocking stats show that one in ten people throw away an item after wearing it…. just three times! Madness!

In Australia the throwaway culture is creating a serious environmental problem, with 24% saying they threw out a garment after just ONE wear, and one in six people binned at least three garments they’d worn only once. This is HORRIFYING!

I mean we LIVE for rocking the same garms, it’s all about how you re-style it baby!

We absolutely loved the recent campaign from Fashion Revolution encouraging people to write a love letter to their most loved and worn item of clothing. Highlighting that we MUST buy more consciously and reinvent our old wardrobe.

Fash Rev’s #haulternative challenge was another fun way of showing consumers ways to refresh their wardrobes, you can read more here.

Keep your eyes peeled for our next article on ways to style up our surfwear and join us in learning to swim against the current of fast fashion! (.. in awesome sustainable swimwear, of course) 🤪

Invest in sustainably produced clothing.

Choose clothing that is multi-functional, timeless and well-made.

Euphoric Threads fashion Boycott Fast Fashion shop sustainable swimwear and festival wear for the waves and raves

Here at Euphoric Threads we are committed to designing high vibe colourful prints that we know stand the test of time, and high quality garments you know you can style for the beach, the yoga studio, gym classes, then wear straight to the parties and festivals!

Euphoric Threads eco-fashion made with love for the planet. Fashion made to last, so you can wear it again and again and again.

Make sure to buy pieces that spark joy, that lasts well, and will wear often. Try to resist that impulse purchase of something you know will fall out of fashion next week. Extending the life of a garment by an extra nine months reduces its impact on the environment by up to 30%. Imagine the impact if you kept that garment for the rest of your life!

3) Don’t bin it, donate it

If you do need to get rid of a few bits, don’t bin ‘em! Every year in the UK, 300,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfills, collectively worth billions of pounds. Apart from being a horrifying, worrying statistic, this also sounds like a hell of a lot of wasted potential.

One person’s trash is another’s treasure!

Consider donating your pre-loved clothes to a charity shop, clothes bank, or women’s shelter. You can also take them to a clothes swap, or organise your own. If it’s something especially jazzy ( like Euphoric Threads for example! ), you could even gift it.

We know how hard it can be to make the change, and we all fall off the wagon sometimes. Don’t be too hard on yourself, mistakes will be made. 5 quid t-shirts may mysteriously work their way into your basket. Make changes when you can, make better choices, and slowly but surely let ‘quality over quantity’ become your mantra! 🌴
